Cocktails and low lighting!

Photographing an event as fast paced as the recent Gin Mare cocktail finals has its own pressures and rewards. You need to be quick with the shots yet the scope for creativity is vast especially when it’s hosted in one of Melbourne’s elite establishments, the Candela Nuevo. Perched high on Melbourne’s skyline using a semi open room with a bar, contestants had a limited time in which to show their ability to create a number of cocktails containing the sponsored liquor.

Perched high on Melbourne’s skyline using a semi open room with a bar, contestants had a limited time in which to show their ability to create a number of cocktails containing the sponsored liquor. As the photographer for the day, I was required to photograph set shots as well as capture the fast paced and sometimes hectic atmosphere. I love the pressure of these shoots as well as relish in the opportunity to be creative and bring the viewer into the comp through the images.

The evening saw us all head to Siglos restaurant for tea and the presentation where the winners would be announced. The open ended meals area of the restaurant gives a great backdrop assisted by the low lighting adding a relaxing atmosphere while enjoying a meal. Due the establishment’s regulations, I was unable to use flash thus seeing me rely on my skills and knowledge of my photography equipment in order to still capture the subsequent social occasion. With the best settings on the camera and some creativity (thanks Jimmy), I was able to pull it off with several interesting results. We decided to host the presentation off side where flash could be used and also captured a number of formal and fun shots of the winners utilizing the stunningly lit historic building across the way as a great backdrop.

All in all, a great night was had and the required images were delivered within the prerequisite couple of days. Life slows down for no one and we need to keep the pace or risk falling behind.

Cheers,

Greg
